About Slickrock Adventures

Slickrock Adventures began in 1977 as a small kayak school. We started on the Colorado River near Moab, Utah, but soon grew to offer whitewater adventures throughout the Rocky Mountain region. The company was founded by Cully Erdman, who sought to create an instructional program within a wilderness setting. His approach has always combined quality instruction in adventure sports with personal attention and expeditions to exotic locations

Cully's adventurous career running rivers worldwide has been documented on numerous films, including expeditions to Nepal, Mexico and Central America. Slickrock's interest in Central America resulted from Cully's early exploration of rivers in Chiapas, Mexico for the American Sportsman television series. Our ongoing quest for new adventures, deep in the heartland of the Maya, focuses on this forgotten corner of the Americas, which boasts some of the most pristine areas in the Caribbean.

After years of leading groups in Chiapas we expanded our expeditions to include sea kayaking in Belize, where we are now entering our twelfth season. Two years ago we expanded our program to include trips to the Bay Islands of Honduras and Belize's first whitewater river run on the Macal River. This year we are adding three new itineraries. Our most ambitious, a trip we call Belize River Medley, a tour of our four favorite rivers in Belize: the Macal, the Caves Branch, the Manatee, and the Belize rivers. Our second new itinerary encompasses explorations of Caracol, Belize's newly discovered Mayan city and several waterfalls in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. Our third new itinerary is by popular demand; a quick three-day visit to the most famous Mayan ruins of all: Tikal in nearby Guatemala.

Our current list of tours reflects a culmination of nineteen years of discovery featuring unique destinations and adventure sport activities not offered elsewhere. As Slickrock owner and lead guide, Cully Erdman brings 25 years of kayaking to offer one of the finest learning and adventure opportunities available. He invites you to join him down south this winter.

Meet Our Slickrock Staff

Cully Erdman: As founder of our company, Cully has extensive experience leading kayak trips with an emphasis on instruction and participation. An avid adventurer, he has led numerous expeditions and has been featured in shows on ABC, ESPN, TBS and Discovery. Most recently he helped direct a river and cave exploration in southern Mexico. With 25 years of guiding, he has extensive knowledge to share. Cully continues to guide many of our trips in Belize and Honduras (photo by Norm Shrewsbury).

Lucy Wallingford: Lucy joined the company in 1986. As Vice-President and office manager, Lucy was involved with the development of our Belize and Honduras programs from their inception. She guides at Glovers Reef and is responsible for our renowned menu. An avid backpacker, she also teaches art to children in her backyard (photo by Norm Shrewsbury).

Michael Gray: Michael has been guiding sea kayak, canoe, backpack and cross country ski programs for over 13 years. Guiding sea kayak trips throughout North America has given him the chance to explore much of the Great Lakes, Alaska, Maine, Washington, and Florida. He has also spent a few months guiding in New Zealand's Abel Tasman park and taught Outdoor Cookery for Guides at Nelson's Polytech. A frequent speaker at sea kayak symposiums, he also enjoys windsurfing and flyfishing (photo by Lucy Wallingford).

Phil Daligan: A native of England, Phil is a full-time guide, spending all of the year guiding in either Belize or Maine. He has been senior instructor for the British Canoe Union and also guided in Chile, Scotland, Wales, England and Norway. We are particularly impressed with the rave reviews he consistently receives from our guests; we are pleased to have such an all-around excellent guide with us for his third year in Belize (photo by Mark Gardner).

Scott Davis: Scott has long been an associate guide and outfitter with Slickrock, having been with us from the beginning in Chiapas, Mexico. In addition to running his own river trips in Mexico, Scott is a long time boatman in the Grand Canyon. Scott joined us in Belize two seasons ago to help with our Adventure Week itinerary, where his river running and caving skills helped make these trips a success. He joins us with his wife, Rachel, on many of our Adventure Week trips (photo by Lucy Wallingford).

Rachel Schmidt: Rachel is a world traveled river guide, having worked in Costa Rica, Europe, Africa and Mexico. She is also a professional mountain bike guide, and leads trips every summer in Colorado, Utah and Idaho. Rachel joined us in two years ago with her husband, Scott, where she pioneered our mountain bike and river trips on Adventure Week. Her infectious good humor, athletic ability and experience ensures every trip she is on will be a stupendous success (photo by Mark Gardner).

Scott Andler: A favorite among our guests, Scott has been guiding for 9 years. He has traveled extensively in Costa Rica and Mexico and is an expert river kayaker as well as ocean paddler. In addition to guiding in Costa Rica, he also spends his summers guiding in the San Juan Islands and in Maine. He also finds time to build his own boats and is a valuable resource for our guests that are interested in boat design.

Gord Pincock: Gord brings to Slickrock his 14 years of guiding experience. During the summer months, Gord works as a wilderness guide on sea kayak tours near his home on the west coast of Canada. He has spent months exploring Baja, the Caribbean and Thailand by kayak. An avid snorkeller and fisherman, Gord's enthusiasm for seafaring life-styles is deeply rooted. An extremely versatile guide, Gord guides for us both in Belize and Honduras (photo by Lucy Wallingford).

Elmo Nunez: Elmo is from Hopkins Village in Belize and has spent his life on the sea. He has fished the waters of Glover's Reef all of his life. His fishing skills keep us well-stocked with fresh seafood, and he is a favorite fishing guide with our guests who want to go sport fishing for bone fish. Elmo is a Garifuns, an ethnic group that inhabits coastal towns in southern Belize and Honduras. He speaks both English and an African dialect which his forebears brought from that continent. This is Elmo's sixth year with Slickrock (photo by Grant Amaral).

John Ariola: Also from Hopkins, and Elmo's best friend since childhood, John is now in his fifth year with us. He knows the cayes of southern Belize as his backyard. One of our most popular activities at Glover's Reef is to accompany John while he hunts for our daily feast; it is inspirational to watch him free dive 30-50 feet to bring up the "big ones". We have even seen him pull a shark's tail! (photo by L.E. Pearson)

Celestina Nunez: Last year we added Celestina to our staff in Belize; we are thrilled she decided to join us as our cook at Glover's Reef. Celestina has lived her life in the largest Garifuna city in Central America: Dangriga of the Stann Creek district. We can't say enough about her fantastic seafood feasts, her great sense of humor and her willingness to endlessly play the latest parlor game in our "parlor" on Long Caye! After only one year of working with her, we can't imagine our life at Long Caye without her (photo by Christine Fleming).
